In the first semester, I was introduced to architecture and design with an analysis of existing buildings. The next step was the first design, which was a freestanding, misused room study in a small valley with a slope.
The final task of the first semester was to design a pavilion for the courtyard of the architecture faculty. The pavilion was to be made of wood so that it could be realised with the resources available to the professorship.
Due to the standard dimensions of timber construction, I learned to orient myself to fixed grids and structures in order to be able to realise the pavilion in the end.
My design developed into a small temple, which in itself creates a private space that is lit from above by a raised central roof. Around this rather closed space is a circular walkway. A slight twisting of the ground plan within the inner courtyard creates exciting axes and visual relationships when viewed. Following the example of the Parthenon, the pavilion presents itself in an aspect ratio of the golden section when first viewed at the entrance to the inner courtyard.
