The Theater und Orchester Heidelberg is a five-division house with music theatre, concert, drama and dance as well as its own ensemble for children's and youth theatre. Right next to it is the design site of the third semester.

With our design "Schaubühne für Heidelberg" we now want to offer the theatre ensemble an appropriate venue and a contact point for cultural activities at a central position in the city.

The performance space with its accompanying functions should do justice to contemporary experimental theatre concepts and not follow the format of the peep-box stage. The idea is to create a flexible performance space in which the boundaries between the audience seats and the stage are fluid and variable. We felt it was important to create a column-free, high and flexible theatre space. This is dominated by two buildings, which contain both visitor and staff functions.

In context, it was important to us to connect the square in the west from the congress centre with our building. This way, our central concert hall sits above the functional buildings and forms a passageway for passers-by underneath. This creates a softening of the building as well as visual relationships between the two sides, which should go hand in hand.

The building is divided into two parts, an audience section with a free, open floor plan and a compact, functional staff section. The café, the workshop and the stage serve as a link between these two parts of the building, and the central location puts this in the foreground.
