The city of Heidelberg has set itself ambitious sustainability goals and wants to lead the way as a pioneer of the circular economy in urban development and planning. The building stock is being successively recorded and analysed so that the data obtained can be made available to planners.

The existing property in Bergheim, Heidelberg consists of 4 row buildings from the 1950s, which stand parallel to each other in a north-south orientation. Between them are 3 courtyards that alternately define entrance and rear courtyards. The courtyards appear very isolated and uninhabited. The site is located at the western entrance to Heidelberg. The neighbourhood has a high proportion of traffic area and is located on a main road with noise and air pollution. It is a diverse neighbourhood, with an above-average number of single-person households.

The idea of the design is to break up the isolation of the site, improve the social structure and create spaces for flexible use so that everyone can participate. This will create a growing community in the neighbourhood. Furthermore, a basic renovation of the existing building with a new thermal envelope and technical installations. An additional storey provides living space for about 160 people.

Sharing connects: we incorporated this motif at various levels. Social spaces share the ground floor of the existing building with the city. Our communication panes share functions of the courtyards among all residents of the block. In the extension, several residential parties share undefined rooms and living rooms. We want to remove the garages on the south side of the courtyards to let more light into them. All the trees in the courtyards should be kept and the use of the space should be organic around them.
